An interesting research idea does not need to be presented as a proven solution. A clear account of the question and the evidence available can be more persuasive than a confident promise. It also gives listeners a better basis for useful feedback.

Applicants from Indonesia considering Sechenov University’s Leaders in Health Innovations programme can practise this approach to scientific communication. The programme combines research development with General Medicine and leadership.

Begin with the question

Explain what you want to understand and why it interests you. Keep the scope manageable. If the idea began with a source, identify the source and distinguish its question from the new question you are asking.

Use hypothetical examples where needed and label them clearly. Do not invent participants, results or partnerships to make a preparation exercise sound like completed research.

Separate support from expectation

State what the evidence suggests within its limits. Then explain what remains your interpretation or proposal. Avoid moving from “this may be worth studying” to “this will improve an outcome” without supporting information.

The programme description includes research and interdisciplinary development. Ask about current learning opportunities rather than treating a general description as approval for a particular project.

Invite a useful kind of feedback

Ask listeners whether the question is clear, whether an assumption is missing or which background concept needs more work. Record the response and revise the idea. The result may be a narrower question, which can be a valuable outcome.
